1. When Planting Tomatoes, Support and Prune them !

When Planting Tomatoes
Support and Prune Them

When Planting Tomatoes,  Support And Prune Them

Install a stake, cage or some trellising device once your plant has adjusted to living in the ground; tomato plants like to grow up up up, and the best way is to have a stake for them to "climb..." Read the article on pruning tomatoes, so that you get more fruit, not just leaf and branch. When you see your plant beginning to flower, pick fruit at it's ripest; don’t let it hang on the vine. Keeping your plants picked will encourage more fruit to grow.

Remember, tomato plants are easy to grow, and with a little love and tender care they will provide you with delicious fruits that taste better than any tomato you can buy at the market all summer long and into the fall. That's all there is to planting tomatoes.

Tomatoes Come In Two Types

  • Determinate plants grow to a determined height (usually about three feet) and then stop growing, and redirect all of their energy into leaf and fruit production. They tend to ripen all of their fruit at about the same time. Many of the big beefsteak varieties are in this category.

Determinates will grow pretty well with minimal support and very little tomato pruning. Keeping them caged will mean cleaner fruit, and they should be bottom pruned (#1) and topped at season’s end (#4), otherwise let them side branch as they will.

  • Indeterminate plants grow vine-like as high or long as they are allowed to. The plants are generally more vigorous and they ripen fruit earlier and continually until the frost gets them. These include most cherry and salad varieties and most heirloom varieties.
  • Indeterminates can be trained, by the proper tomato pruning, to several stems or just one, and should be pruned continually during the season to get continual fruit production.

Since I can fruit, I prefer the continual harvests that indeterminates provide, plus we really love the flavor of the  Cherry  tomatoes for Salads and Tomato Juice.

I prefer to grow them as a single stemmed plant wrapped around (always clockwise) a tall stake or around bailing twine suspended from a vertical pole 7 feet off the ground. I build a trellis from the pole with a length of twine dropped every 8 inches, much the same, as you would grow pole beans. I plant and grow the indeterminate tomato plants at 8 inch intervals along the string trellis.

  • Installing cages or wire hoops also works well to support the tall Indeterminate varieties.

Now, let’s discuss the tomato pruning specifics. Again, only #1 and # 4 apply to determinates, while all apply to indeterminates.

  1. Leafy stems grow directly from the main stem, and above each leaf stem is a flower stem also growing directly out to the main stem. Prune all leaf stems that grow below the first flower stem. That will put the energy into those first fruits. Also pluck any blossoms that bloom before the plant is 12 to 18 inches tall, to insure the plant has a good start before the fruit stage.
  2.

  3. At the base of each leaf stem, in the crotch or node, a sucker stem or side branch will grow. These are the ones that should be pinched out on indeterminate varieties; by grabbing the new shoot between thumb and forefinger and snapping it off.

If you want a multi-stemmed plant, let the first sucker grow from the bottom leaf node, and a second or even a third sucker grow from the next nodes up, pinching all the rest as they immerge. Since I prefer single stemmed plants, I pinch all the suckers. That produces a single stemmed plant that puts most of its energy into producing fruit all season long.

There is another style of tomato pruning called the “Missouri Method” which allows the first set of leaves to remain on the sucker stem, pinching out the growth tip just above them. This method provides extra leaf surface to aid in better photosynthesis, but the downside is that each of those extra leaves will also spawn new suckers that will later have to be pinched again. I don’t like all that extra pruning.

  4.

  5. As the growing season proceeds it is normal for some of the leaves to yellow and die. Snap or prune these from your plants, as well. This will increase air circulation and sunlight to the rest of the plant, and reduce the incidence of disease.
  6.

  7. As you near the end the tomato season, your plants need to stop producing new fruit and leaves, and concentrate on ripening the fruit already on the vine. You can help the plant to focus by topping or pinching out all of the growth tips. This should be done 30 days before the date of the first expected frost date. In my area, the first frost is usually in the second week of October, so we “top” the tomato plants during the second week in September.

Many gardeners like to tie off their indeterminate tomatoes as they climb. If you do, the ties should be at about one-foot intervals, near a flower stem to better support the fruit. Strips of old cotton (biodegradable) cloth works best.

Using my single stemmed method of wrapping the plant stem clockwise around bailing twine that is secured bottom and top, I have never found it necessary to tie off my plants. I’ve even grown melons, cucumbers and winter squash up those strings without ties. Zucchini, on the other hand, won’t wind around the twine and must be tied off.

When your tomato plant has grown seven, or eight trusses of tomatoes, and reached the top of your stake or trellis it's time to break off the growing tip. While this may seem a bit harsh, it will encourage more robust produce, than a bunch of teeny tiny tomatoes that lack flavor and luster.

Tomato pruning is a bit of work, but it’s worth it. You’ll have more fruit, ripening earlier, and you’re less likely to suffer the gardeners’ nightmare – a green tomato summer.

How to Plant Tomato Plants Outside

Watering Your Tomato Plants

How To Plant Tomato Plants

When your tomato plants are ready to be planted outside, repeat the phrase "deep planting" over and over again, so you don't forget it. Most plants rebel if transplanted deeper than they have been growing. Not so with tomatoes – the stem will thrive if it's buried in soil up to the first leaf, allowing new roots to sprout and grow from the newly buried portion of the stalk.

In about three weeks those new roots will cause the plant to explode into new top growth as well. Remember that the stronger its base, the higher your tomato plant can soar!Use a natural compost to fertilize your plant. If you don't currently make compost at your home, you can head to a local garden center and buy organic compost by the bag. They also need a good tomato fertilizer with enough phosphorous to assure that your plants will blossom heavily and set plenty of fruit.

Avoid applying harmful pesticides to your tomato plant, and let nature do its job! I'm a firm believer in organic gardening, and over the past fifty years or so I've seen major changes made to gardens...it's all, chemicals, chemicals, chemicals! When planting tomatoes, treat them right and you won't need to go that route.

Also a hint is to plant Marigold, Onions and Garlic around your Tomato Plants. This will keep many harmful insects and small animals from entering your garden.

Watering Your Tomatoes

When planting tomatoes, proper watering is crucial. Water regularly and deeply, but not too often once the plants are established. Deep watering encourages roots to grow deep where they will have access to a smorgasbord of minerals to feast upon.

Watering during the early morning will allow your plants to soak in more water without it evaporating in summer's heat. Nighttime watering interferes with the plants' need to take in oxygen through their roots after the day (and photosynthesis) is done.

Water at the base of your plants, rather than overhead. Getting the leaves wet encourages disease in tomatoes, as well as other vegetables. Drip systems are ideal. How often you water will depend not only on your climate, but also on your soil type.

Remember always tomatoes do not like to vary their dryness. In other words don't wait until they get dry to water them. Water them on a constant schedule for best results.

If you are going to be away for more than a couple of days, and there's no rain on the forecast, have someone come tend to your plants. Irregular watering can do serious damage, and your tomato plants will not bear fruit.  It is best to set up a wattering system.  A Timer and a few feet of plastic pipe will go a long was in raising you beautiful tomatoes plus save you a lot of work and effort.

3. Growing a Garden is Easier than you can think !
Blog-3-Mar24
Planting Tomatoes
Starting Tomatoes from Seeds
and when to plant them !

Plantng Tomatoes How to and When?

Planting tomatoes shouldn't be backbreaking work.... in fact, quite the opposite! They are easy to plant, thrive if the conditions are right, and once ripe, they taste nothing like the their distant relations at the supermarket that are ripened using gas!

There's a reason growing tomatoes is so popular; they're the perfect plant for the new gardener, and there is lots of room to experiment for the veteran.

The first step in planting tomatoes is picking the perfect spot. Tomato plants adore sunlight, and will need about fourteen hours of it per day. If you are unable to find a spot with full sun for your plants in the yard, consider purchasing a small florescent light to give them artificial sunlight, and growing them indoors!

Gardening is about flexibility, and if you can't bring your plant to the elements, bring the elements to your plant!

When To Plant Tomatoes

You know that tomato plants are not frost hardy, so obviously they cannot be planted out until after the last frost. If you are growing your own plants from seed, growing to transplant size takes about 6 weeks.

So, plant those seeds indoors, in your greenhouse or cold frame six weeks before the last expected frost date for your area.

I use a styrefome dozen egg carton. Punch some holes in the bottom with and Ice pick.  Sift out your potting soil so it is fine. Fill the egg carton full with sifted potting soil. Pack it down. Water it good. I use a cleaned out  2 gallon Garden sprayer to water with.

Use a pencil eraser end, to punch two holes in each corner of the egg pouches. Twenty four in all in a dozen egg carton. Drop two seeds in each hole. Cover with more sifted potting soil and re-water. Let sit on a paper towel for about one half hour for any excess water to drain. That will require 24 seeds for each dozen egg carton. Some may not germinate.

Shut the lid of the egg carton tightly and place on top of your Refrigerator where it is warm constantly. This will stimulate germination much faster. Watch for the next 7 days for them to sprout out.

Once they sprout out open the lids and place under a florescent light to give them artificial sunlight. Keep the light within one foot of the plants.  Try and maintain the temperature constant day and night until they get there first two leaves. They will be about one  to one and a one inches high. Be sure and water them every day a little bit. Tomato plants like constant watering on a schedule.

Once they have reached their two leaves you can transplant them into styrefome cups that you can purchase very cheaply at the grocery store. Fill the cups up three quarter full of sifted potting soil and using a table spoon lift out one entire egg pouch with small tomato plants at each end.  Divide the spooned out pouch in half with a small sharp knife. Plant one half in each cup and fill around it with more potting soil.

Label the cups so you know what kind of plant it was.  Water them again using B1, in the water, which can be purchased in a concentrate from Home Depot or Loews.  Requires about two tablespoons per gallon of water. This has many nutrients to help stimulate root production which is very important in its beginning growth.

After a day or two you can set the cups outside in the sun for a few hours and bring them in at night when it is colder. Once they have been conditioned to outside weather, they can be transplanted in the garden. I use 2 liter plastic pop bottles with the top and bottom cut off around the baby plants to prevent the wind and birds from destroying them until they get about 6 to 8 inches tall. The containers can then be removed.

But, frost alone does not dictate the time for planting tomatoes. They are a subtropical species that will not thrive and grow vigorously until the soil temperature has climbed to about 50 degrees or so.

Planted in cold soil, even after frost, most tomatoes will just sit and wait. This will permanently stunt your plants and will not result in an earlier harvest. For best results, check your soil temperature and delay planting out until your soil warms.

If you must jump the gun, choose a tomato variety that will grow and bloom in cooler temperatures. There are several, so check the online seed catalogs.

4. Growing a Garden is Easier than you can think !

Growing a Garden in Your Back Yard
It's easier than you think !.

Hi My name is Roland Dufault. I have lived in Phoenix, Arizona, USA for over 30 years now. Going Green in Arizona, for me is a lot of fun. Mainly because I can grow my Garden all year round. Many people in the world grow their own gardens to provide food for themselves and their families

It requires very little space, just your back yard can provide you with a multitude of vegtables that can be dried or canned or frozen to provide food for months.

Once you get started you can easily gather your own seeds for the next year.

You can save your rain water or just let it fall on your garden. The tools required are few.

Having your own mulch pile from your left over food or food products like the shells from your eggs, the topping from your vegetables, your grass clippings and weeds around you home within 8 to 10 weeks will provide you great mulch which furnishes you the great fertilizer for your Garden.

5. Niche Marketing
Niche Marketing (Cracking the Code with JP Schoeffel)

Hi Roland Dufault here with my regular Blog Article.

The following is an article article pertaining to Niche Marketing|RolandDufault . It was submitted to me from JP. He sent it to me to share with you guys, and it’s a great blueprint for getting starting in your online business.

Our idea was for me to make comments throughout the article and engage you in a discussion about the information covered. You’ll see my comments indented, so please post your comments and questions below…

If you haven’t met JP Schoeffel (of NichesInaBox.com) before, let me tell you that he’s one of the most stand-up marketers I know, and his integrity is second to none. In fact, when he promoted for me he was right there with his subscribers making sure their questions and support got handled quickly. He really cares about his people, so you’d do well to listen to his advice. Not only that, he knows how to make money online - he’s been one of my very biggest JV partners. Here’s JP’s step-by-step plan for you:

1. Find a topic you’re interested in…

…or something you think is funny, or a good trend. Simply head to eBay pulse, Yahoo Buzz, or Google Trends to identify that kind of hot topics:

pulse.eBay.com

buzz.Yahoo.com

Google.com/trends

You can also simply go to Digg, Technorati, Reddit, StumbleUpon and see what the most popular topics are, and the kind of comments they receive. It’s a great source of information and it will help you position your site and tone.

The thing is you want to identify a popular topic that you feel could be popular for many weeks or even months.

2. Set up a blog.

You want to do it the free way. That’s easy. Simply create a blogger blog (google blogging platform), or a hosted wordpress blog (wordpress.com). I recommend wordpress as the usability is second to none.

I also highly recommend WordPress - it’s what’s running the IMGeni.us Blog!

As you see, you don’t need a domain name, or private hosting (of course if you already have a hosting account, and want more flexibility, then install it on your server, and register a domain name accordingly). For hosting you have ‘easy’ plans with HostGator.

3. Find some keywords that will orient the content youwant to post on your blog.

Find them with your head first: by checking what is popular on social bookmarking sites and trend report sites. You can identify the popular searches that keyword tools won’t have yet in their database. Then try to imagine, as a ‘visitor’ the kind of info you would like to find. Write them down

You can go to freekeywords.WordTracker.com to get 100 variations on any keyword at no co*st. It could easily complete your list ...

Finally, if you need some additional lateral keyword, you can go to one of my favorite tools: KWMap.net

4. Create some articles

You can simply Google your keyword in an exact search : “bird feeding in winter” and see how you can summarize some of this. Note: use the quotes front and back.

You can also go to wikipedia.org and find some content that you can then ‘use’ for your article (not copy / paste, but just to gather the ideas)

The U.S. government also has some nice content sources. Here is, for example, a resource I used when I did some research for the last 4 Niches-in-a-box packages (just for stats and topics research): nlm.nih.gov

NLM stands for National Library of Medicine, from the NIH: National Institutes of Health. It’s the world largest medical library

Government information at NLM Web sites is in the public domain, although some parts might be provided by licensed 3rd parties. But this means you can re-use the content on your site. It’s good to always give credit to the source though, especially in the medical field as it gives credibility to your site and also removes any liability from you.

But just a quick search on the web will give you access to any government sources. And they are simply awesome.

5. Post content to your blog.

At first you can create 5 to 10 articles, split them into 4 or 5 categories (you will be able to add more categories to your blog with time), and post 2 or 3 each and every day during the first 3 to 4 weeks.

Then you can feed it with say 1 article every 2 days or so.

If you’re concerned about starting a blog, don’t worry. It’s easy and using WordPress makes so simple. If you can type an email you can create a WordPress blog.

6. Now, if you look back to what you have.

You might be delighted, but you might also be frustrated: you have a good site, using a robust and reliable blog platform. With time, you have even added some affiliate links to your posts or sidebar to start monetizing it.

You even tried to add adsense blocks to it.,/p>

But No traffic! Nada! Well, it’s normal! What you did is a bit like if you had written 10 pages in your office and were wondering why no one calls you to congratulate you about these wonderful articles.

Of course the world does not know about your site, your articles, your concept…

7. To start driving traffic.

You need to inform the World Wide Web that you exist. To do so, you have 2 ways:

Put some links on other sites: those ‘backlinks’ link directly to your site, and someone could click on them. Let search engines spread the word about your site. But please be nice to them or they will ban you immediately. Of course it’s a big summary of what traffic generation is… but that’s pretty much all.

You can find lots of additional information about generating traffic right here on the IMGeni.us Blog.

But to make this a real blueprint, here is what you could do drive traffic almost instantly to your site:

Submit all your posts to 4 or 5 social bookmarking sites (digg, stumbleupon, technorati, furl, …): try to be creative there for your Title and stories so that people want to read them

Find some blog related to your niche and comment on them (I did not say ’spam them’, but comment, bring value to them and do not forget to link back to your site)

Find forums related to your site, join them, read them, and then start contributing

Submit your blog feed to feed directories

Submit your articles to ezinearticles.com and articledashboard.com for more long term traffic

For in-depth info on Article Marketing, please see this post

8. TRACK!

Don’t do any of the above without setting a tracker on your site

StatCounter.com is a free traffic tracker that you can easily plug into your blogger blog or wordpress blog (they give you step-by-step instructions to do so).

Another amazing tool that’s also free is Google Analytics. This is what I use on all my sites.

This is fundamental - generating traffic is simply useless if you don’t know

where it comes from

what keywords are currently generating traffic (your live site is your best keyword research tool)

what marketing efforts (social bookmarking, forum, blog commenting, etc.) generated the most traffic, to what kind of article

how long your visitor stays on your page

what they do on your page

As you see all this does not cost a dime: just a little bit of your time.

But, if you want to go the extra 10 miles and find tools that will automate things for you then you might also look for:

a script to automatically post to your blog

scripts to automatically submit your posts to social bookmarking

a site generator

niche packages to upload and start marketing

a PLR membership that will do the market research, keyword research, content creation, site building…

Thus removing 6-7 out of 8 steps in the above process…

JP Schoeffel

Incidentally, JP site, NichesInaBox.com does provide you with the majority of the resources, tools and work done for you. I’m not sure why he doesn’t plug his site in this article, but it really does 99% of the work for you. I encourage you to check it out Niches In A Box today.

Please post your comments and questions below

6. 10 tips for Supersizing your Affiliate Commissions
One of the best affiliate programs that I am using has all of the components build into it that allow you to supersize your Affiliate commissions and more. Read this short article the emphasizes what things are necessary in an affiliate site that will make you money on line. 10 tips for Supersizing your Affiliate Commissions by Elizabeth McGee Why is it that some affiliate marketers rake in the commissions while others make very little money, or worse yet, no money at all? Those with dismal monthly commissions are more than likely missing several key ingredients. Here are 10 essential affiliate marketing strategies that all affiliate marketers should pay particular attention to. They include elements that will help provide your visitors with what they are looking for, help you generate trust, promote you as an authority and create community, all key components for supersizing your affiliate commissions. 1. Be Genuine with Visitors Create content on your site that makes your visitors feel you are speaking directly to them. Speak like you are talking directly to a friend. Don't be afraid to be a little personal or make comments that reveal you as a real person. Always remain professional but add an element of personality, keep it light, to the point and interesting. Invite questions and comments. The idea is to create a community of visitors that look to you for information and feedback. 2. Deliver content and lots of it Search engines and visitors alike want to see content. But not just any content, keep it original, factual, fresh and interesting. The more content the better. Having content that draws readership helps to establish you as an authority in your niche and direct viewers to affiliate resources that help them find what they are looking for. 3. Write comprehensive product reviews Don't simply bombard your viewers with affiliate links sending them directly to a product sales page. Your visitors don't want to be forced to a sales page; they need to be sold from a source that is trustworthy. That's why product reviews work so well. Take the time to purchase the product you are promoting and do a careful review of what your findings are. There's no better way to promote something than if you use it and feel the benefits yourself. This genuine tone will come across in your review and your viewers will completely see that. 4. Build a list of subscribers This isn't as hard as it sounds. Simply place a sign-up form on your site and request sign-ups for your newsletter, daily tips for email course. Offer an incentive such as a free e-book or something of value to entice sign-ups. You'll soon begin getting subscribers which lets you directly communicate with visitors on a consistent basis while developing relationships, trust and allowing for an occasional promotion now and then. 5. Create a free small report, e-book or e-course Creating an information product related to your niche or the products you are promoting creates trust, not to mention your viewers will thank you for the tips. It also offers you the benefit of including your affiliate links within the report. Giving away something of value that is free also provides a viral effect because it can get into more hands a lot faster. You can also use this to entice sign-ups for your newsletter or opt-in form. 6. Don't send links to your home page Unless your home page is your sales page, don't send visitors there. Send your visitors to specific product pages. For example, many affiliate marketers spend hours and hours creating inbound links for their site by means of link exchanges, articles, advertisements, etc., however the most common mistake they make is to direct those links to their home page. Instead, choose the most relevant page on your site for the link back. If you happen to submit an article on how to find the best running shoes, link to the running shoes page of your site, not the main page of your shoes site! 7. Select affiliate programs with quality promotional tools Check affiliate programs out carefully. Affiliate with programs that offer good sales tools such as articles, brandable PDF's, personalized emails, classified ad samples and of course quality banners and text ads. The more quality tools your affiliate managers provide, the more successful you will be. 8. Get to know your affiliate managers Send a note to your affiliate manager letting them know who you are. Ask specific questions about the products you are promoting and if there are any tips or suggestions you can offer you. You would be surprised how effective this can be. The timeliness of the response you get or the lack of it is also a good indicator of whether or not the affiliate program is worth it. 9. Review the affiliate site carefully Have a good look around the affiliate site. Would you buy from them? How compelling is the sales page? If they have lots of third party advertisements or Google Ads on the site, drop them like a hot potato. 10. Mask ugly affiliate links Don't promote ugly affiliate links. Firstly, it's an easy way for unscrupulous buyers to avoid using your link and go directly to the affiliate site whereby you lose commissions, but secondly, it's ugly. Find a way to set up a redirect for your affiliate link or use a link cloaker for creating a more professional looking link. About the Author For even more tips on increasing your affiliate commissions or how you can create a powerful cash pulling affiliate marketing business see: http://www.homenotion.com/recommends/superaffiliate The affiliate site I am referring to is the NPN Program. You simply choose a high traffic keyword, build a keyword specific website, place information daily, using that keyword string and you have a very successful seo campaign in the works." So here are some questions you need to ask yourself: 1. Honestly, how hard can this process be, folks? 2. But having said that, how many articles did you write today to promote your online business? 3.How many websites did you build today? 4.How many press releases did you write today, to promote your online business? 5.If you are like most people that I talk with, you have just not gotten around to that process yet. And Remember Hobbies cost you Money and Business Make you money so you must always treat your business as a business. In your advertising budget there should be a portion of it set up to build for yourself a Contact list of Double optin People who have given you permission to Email them with any specials, or new comments that they will need to run their business. The newsletters should go out on a regular basis at least once per week. It should be informative and helpful to all people on line. It is designed to build a relationship with them so that they will trust what you tell them in the future. Of course there needs to be a way for them to opt out of your newsletter and possibly a way that they can also advertise there business in your newsletter, which lowers your cost. All Contacts list should contain the recipients first name if possible so that when you mail to them you can personalize it to them. Their name should be used several times. This causes them to read more of it looking for their name in the article. The contact that you get should be niched for your particular product or service that you are offering to get effective results for your future sales. Every Internet marketer must have an optin list and building this must be an ongoing task. It is the only way any online business can survive. The equation is simple. No optin list, no money! It is doubly important to build an optin list that has subscribers who are willing to receive emails from you! By getting their permission to send them info, you can work on building a relationship with them so that they trust you enough to recommend you to their friends and associates. For email marketing to be effective, it is mandatory not to be a spammer. On an average, most people receive a few hundred mails each day. So they would simply hate receiving unsolicited emails from strangers unless they ask for it. So it is better to get them to sign up legitimately, have them confirm that they actually did ask to be on your list, and then send them your marketing messages. I have a list now of well over 207,000 members to mail to each week. It has taken me about a year and a half to do this but it is well worth the while. How powerful is this? It is so powerful, many people are making thousands of dollars every day and week from their build in Optin List of Niched People who are interested in Marketing on the Internet. Each month there are many millions more marketeers looking for a business on the Internet. So get started right away and build yur list! If you you need extra help I will be happy to lend you a hand as to what has worked for me. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
